There are different forms in everyday life, which are bordered by simple or complicated surfaces. We can illustrate and understand the shape and precise formation of these surfaces by means of mathematics.
The math exhibition “Forms and Formulas” demonstrates which formulas define even very complex surfaces. Where do math lessons in middle school lead? Who would have thought to be able to describe a snail shell by a mathematical function? We can also do calculations on helicoids.
Nowadays, computer graphics facilitate the visualization of rather complex surfaces. The posters of the exhibition demonstrate this. Different 3D-models (moebius strip, double helix) will help to understand mathematical connections, which will be occasionally surprising.
The exhibition is hosted by FUTURA “Interactive Science Experience Center” Mosonmnmagyaróvár, Hungary. It will take place from June 21st to August 31st, 2014, kindly supported by the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach and the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
